In Puning Temple, there is a statue of the world's largest gold-lacquered wood carving, the thousand-handed Guanyin Bodhisattva. It is 23.51 meters tall and weighs a massive 110 tons.
Today we also specially arranged a boat so that we can take a trip that might be similar to what the emperor and his wives and concubines might have experienced all those years ago.
The hall in the middle that we’re looking at now is Yanbozhishuang Temple. It’s located in the emperor’s palace. The middle three rooms and the two rooms on the east side are where the emperor talked with his concubines and ate. The rooms on the west are where he worshipped Buddha, read, and slept. In the Qing Dynasty, four emperors lived in this house: Kangxi, Qianlong, Jiaqing, and Xianfeng. Of those four, 2 of them, Jiaqing and Xianfeng, died in this very bed.
Chengde Mountain Resort covers an area of 5.64 million square meters, equivalent to eight times the Beijing Imperial Palace, or 789 football fields. The park can be split into several sections, with the palace area in the south, lakes in the southeast, mountains in the northwest, and plains in the north.
Right now is the hottest time of the year in China, and we’ve come to the northern part of the city of Chengde in Hebei, which is about 230 kilometers away from Beijing. There is a royal garden here that was designed and built two hundred years ago. The resort is called Chengde Mountain Resort, and is a beautiful place with great historical value.
